Macy Gray: Ms. Funk talks music, movies and her teen trio

When many of us think of Macy Gray, we think of a woman who has fabulous funked-up hair that would look ridiculous on the rest of us, we think of Prince-esque fashion and a music empire that has been built around a one-of-a-kind raspy voice. Here Macy visits with us about her latest movie, music and what Zac Efron is really like…

Macy GrayKat: You’re in a new movie, The Paperboy, which is due out this fall. Can you tell us a little bit about the movie and your character in it?

Macy: It takes place in the '60s, in the south. It’s a really twisted murder mystery. It’s all about the investigation of an old murder and I play a maid.

Kat: In this movie you worked with Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey, which makes you pretty much the envy of every female in America.

Macy: I know, right?

Kat: What was that like, and can you share anything about those guys that we don’t know -- like they clip their toenails in front of other people during breaks or stuff like that.

Macy: Well, Zac is adorable. Like as beautiful as he is, if the girls knew how sweet he is, they’d lose it. Matt is this machine. He knows what he’s doing at all times. I actually learned a lot from him. They’re in a whole other stratosphere of acting, so I was fortunate to be around that.

Kat: Speaking of cinematic crushes, who was yours when you were growing up?

Macy: My girl crush was Diana Ross. I was just so in awe of Diana Ross. I always wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I used to love those old Marlon Brando movies. I think he’s the most beautiful man that ever lived when he was younger. Oh! And Buck and the Preacher with Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier.

Kat: At the end of October, you're releasing your own version of Stevie Wonder’s album, Talking Book. Just curious: of all the artists and music you had to choose from, what made you zero on in this particular collection?

Macy: My producer and I were talking about cover songs, and he was saying I should cover a whole album. He said people remake movies all the time, but he didn’t think anyone had remade an entire album. So we started going back and forth on different records, but Talking Book was something I really got in to when I was in college and I knew every word and every beat. It was a record that I really loved.

Kat: I guess I didn’t realize you went to college. What’s your degree in?

Macy: I graduated with a degree in screenwriting.

Kat: You’ve had a long and varied career. What’s been a career high for you?

Macy: One of the best things that has come of it is seeing the world. Before I started making records, I had never been out of the states. Suddenly, I’m in Paris and London and Germany and places that I never dreamed I’d be. Even if I had become a world traveler I may have never picked some of these places. It really opens your mind when you get to see different cultures and different kinds of life.

Kat: Sometimes you read about when artists go on tour they get so busy that it’s all concerts, hotel rooms and busses. Were you actually able to check places out?

Macy: Oh yeah. I always go out and see different things. It’s exciting to get around in different places.

Kat: Great to people watch and eat different food, right?

Macy: It’s interesting to meet people who aren’t Americans.

Kat: How about a career low? Was there ever a time when you thought, “Holy Lord, what am I doing?”

Macy: Boy. When you get stuck in the business of it. There is always strategy and planning that goes on and you have to wait for all that. There’s all this music that I want to put out.

Kat: I saw an interview where you said you wanted to be a fireman. Is there a story behind that?

Macy: I was just being a kid. I wanted to be a fireman, and I saw Bonnie and Clyde and I wanted to be a bank robber, and I wanted to be a teacher like my mom.

Kat: You’ve got three teenagers! How is that treating you?

Macy: They’re awesome people. Raising kids at any age is difficult, and when they’re teenagers it’s another level of difficult. It’s not easy, but I’m trying to work it out.

Kat: Do they ever gang up on you?

Macy: No, they don’t really do that, but they are definitely on each other’s side on some things. They’re teenagers so they see things the same way, which blows my mind sometimes -- their perspective on some things. And then the fact that they all agree with each other is hilarious.

Kat: Do they like to listen to Mom sing or Mom’s music?

Macy: They know all my stuff and they’re with me in the studio a lot and they hear it when I’m at home after I record.

Kat: Do they ever come to you with a song and say, “Hey Mom, you should put this on your next album.”

Macy: They definitely help me out with the songs that they think are the best ones. Yeah, they’re opinionated when it comes to music. They help me out a lot actually.

Kat: So you’ve got a movie coming out, an album coming out, are you going to take the winter off? What’s next?

Macy: I’m actually touring this winter, and I shoot a movie at the beginning of 2013, and after that I’m not sure. I know I’ll be busy.

Nicole Kidman refused to say the N-word in The Paperboy

In an eyebrow-raising performance in Lee Daniels' new film, The Paperboy, Nicole Kidman famously urinates on Zac Efron. But there were some things she just wouldn't do.

Nicole Kidman New York Film Festival

Urinate on Zac Efron? Check.

Pantomime fellating John Cusack? Check.

But call an African-American character the N-word? No way. For Nicole Kidman, that was going one step too far.

During a press conference Wednesday at the New York Film Festival for Lee Daniels' new film, The Paperboy, Daniels, who is African-American, noted his initial frustration with Kidman's refusal, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Kidman responded at the conference, "I didn't feel like it was right for the character."

Then she added, "I have a son who's African-American and I just didn't feel it was right. It wasn't right."

The film, based on a novel by Pete Dexter, concerns a reporter's investigation into a possible wrongful murder conviction, with Kidman playing a death-row groupie. The film also features Matthew McConaughey as the reporter and David Oyelowo as his partner.

Daniels recounted at the press conference that when he expressed his consternation about Kidman's refusal to a producer, the producer said he had put Kidman's character in a compromising sexual position and that he'd had her pee on Zac Efron, so maybe it was time to cut her some slack.

Now about that peeing scene. It's when Efron, who plays McConaughey's brother in the film, gets stung by a jellyfish . Daniels, who is known for pushing actors beyond their comfort zone, told GQ that even he had some qualms about putting that in the film.

The first day of shooting, he got a sex scene with Kidman and Cusack out of the way. The second day, was a "telepathic sex scene" in a prison. The third day was the peeing scene.

"I called Nicole at three in the morning. I said, 'Nicole, I can't do it, I've gone too far. I can't put that scene in the movie.' She said, 'Lee, you made me pee on Zac Efron, if you don't put that in the movie, you're out of your freakin' mind,'" the Precious director said.

"So we put it in."

The Paperboy review: Nicole Kidman pees on Zac Efron!

$

Set in 1960s rural Florida, this sexy, sordid tale of lust and bad luck surprises and shocks so disturbingly you can’t look away. Zac Efron comes of age in mostly just his underwear while Nicole Kidman dazzles as a horny death-row groupie and Matthew McConaughey crosses into racially-charged sexual taboos. What’s not to like about this new film from the director of Precious?

The Paperboy

5 Stars: Perfect for those who like to delve into the dark side of life

Miami Times reporter Ward Jansen returns home to Lately, Florida, with fellow journalist Yardley Acheman to investigate a man named Hillary Van Wetter , who may be wrongfully sentenced to death row.

Ward’s younger brother Jack has recently returned from college where he lost his swimming scholarship and now delivers papers for his dad’s small-town newsrag.

Ward and Jack’s mother left the family some time ago, for reasons unknown, leaving Jack in search of maternal attention. Unfortunately, his ripe libido confuses his desires, as demonstrated in his complicated relationship with the Jansen family maid Anita , who narrates the film.

The Paperboy

If Ward and Yardley can prove Hillary Van Wetter is innocent of killing a cop, this will be the scoop of their career and launch them to journalistic fame. Their secret weapon is a woman named Charlotte Bless , who has been obsessively writing love letters to the death-row inmate and believes she has proof of his innocence.

The combination of these misguided souls proves to be a devastating train wreck, particularly as hidden desires rise to the surface. Charlotte is a woeful yet strong-willed woman who oozes sex and has a strangely erotic first encounter with Hillary Van Wetter, who is so disturbingly creepy you wonder if she doesn’t have a death wish.

Sexual tension between Charlotte and Jack also rages out of control, especially after he’s stung by a jellyfish and she pees all over his buff and rippled body to alleviate the pain. Although Charlotte is old enough to be his mother, Jack falls tragically in love with her, and suffers deeply for it.

The scenes where Jack, Ward and Yardley travel into the backwoods swamp, attempting to collect evidence from the criminal’s family, are harrowing. Watching a strung-up alligator being gutted is the perfect visual symbol for the down and dirty emotional violence in the movie.

The Paperboy

Nicole Kidman is fantastic as the southern sexpot who claims accused murderer Van Wetter is “not so bad, and I’m not so good.”  Zac Efron is divine as the young man struggling to find himself in this complicated world of closeted sin, sex and disturbing violence.

Bottom line: this isn’t an uplifting film, but the characters are so dark and delicious, they will blow your mind. If you like exploring the world of the ugly, The Paperboy is must-see cinema.

From their dazzling dresses to their sparkling personalities, the stars of New Year’s Eve were absolutely stunning at their premiere Monday night. SheKnows was on the carpet to get you all the scoop on this festive flick.

The carpet at the premiere of New Year's Eve was almost as star-studded as the movie itself, with gorgeous actresses like Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Lea Michele all showing up in show-stopping dresses.

Movie Review: New Year's Eve has 'more celebrities than rehab!'>>

Hilary Swank jokes about her wardrobe at the New Years's Eve premiere.

What was Hilary Swank's wardrobe malfunction?

When Swank stopped to chat with SheKnows, she let us in on a little wardrobe malfunction with her gown, asking our opinion on how to fix it!

"I think my arms are in the wrong holes," the actress laughed, before proceeding to show us the different ways to wear her sleeves. "I think you have to have a degree to figure out how to put these dresses on."

Either way, we think she looked fab in her navy blue number and diamond Neil Lane chandelier earrings. After dishing on the film, Swank let us in on her favorite part of the New Year's Eve holiday.

"Just sitting at home with my friends and family around the kitchen table, reflecting on the year past and the year to come," said Swank.

Who will Lea Michele kiss on New Year's Eve?

Lea Michele says about New Year's Eve, "I'll probably force my best friend to makeout with me."

Glee star Lea Michele, sporting a gorgeous Valentino gown, told us she too enjoys spending the holiday with loved ones.

"New York City, my family, champagne… perfect," Michele described her ideal New Year's.

And just because she's single, doesn't mean she won't be getting any action on midnight.

"I'll probably force my best friend to make out with me," Michele joked.

What can you expect from teen star Abigail Breslin?

Another of the film's leading ladies may be too young to talk kisses just yet, but she isn't too young to sport A-lister attire. Abigail Breslin, 15, was stunning in a white frilly frock as she spoke very maturely about her successful career.

"I feel very lucky that I get to do movies, but once I go home it's just about hanging out with my family and friends," Breslin told us.

Fergie and Josh Duhamel at the New Year's Eve premiere

Who looked better: Fergie or hubby Josh?

And although the starlets stole the spotlight Monday night, we have to hand it to hotties Zac Efron and Josh Duhamel for their dapper duds, as well.

Efron looked amazing in a slick grey suit as he posed with his love interest in the film, Michelle Pfeiffer. While Duhamel looked dashing too, it was his lady love Fergie in her sequined white dress that really wowed the crowd, stopping to blow a kiss to SheKnows.

Zac Efron begs pap not to sell sex shop shot

Zac Efron, careful with his image, asks a photographer to dump a shot of the star surrounded by a rainbow of glowing dildos.

Zac Efron on a movie set

I was in the sex shop for a movie! Seriously! That's what Zac Efron's reps told the tabloids that printed pics of the High School Musical heartthrob in Manhattan's Fantasy World sex shop.

True, Efron has been filming Are We Officially Dating in and around New York City in January, and he wasn't hanging around Fantasy World alone in a raincoat — the movie crew joined him at the shop, where Efron perused the script.

That was when a photographer grabbed a shot of him, glaring right through the window with a forest of tumescent dildos, lit like a Renaissance painting, right behind him.

According to the New York Daily News, an eyewitness spotted Efron arguing with said photographer.

"Zac was begging the guy to delete the pictures," the eyewitness told the Daily News. "He kept telling him he has so many young fans and he didn't want them to see it."

Say, really? Is that so? Does Zac Efron really have a lot of young fans? Let's think about this. High School Musical came out in 2006. The third-graders who went crazy over Efron's blue eyes then are all in ninth grade now.

Love Zac Efron's body in The Lucky One? He shocked himself!>>

Since everyone knows that kids retain the same tastes from age 9 to age 15, um, sure, we can all buy Efron has "lots" of young fans, right?

Obviously, Efron wasn't successful in suppressing the shot. On the other hand, he did get his aging mug out there, which hasn't been happening a lot of late.

Efron's face is filling out a little, he dumped the emo hair, got a bit of a beard. What do you think, gossip fans? Aging better than the Olsen twins, isn't he?

This flick didn't get much love from the critics over at Rotten Tomatoes, but we figure our SheKnows readers might give it a shot considering it stars Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman.
